It's International Tea Day on May 21. The day aims to promote and encourage sustainable production and consumption of tea as well as celebrating the health benefits of tea.

Tea is the most consumed drink in the world after water. It is also one of the world’s oldest beverages and is now grown in around 52 countries but the oldest tree is in China and is said to be approximately 3,200 years old.

Tea is consumed not only for its flavour and caffeine kick but also for the variety of health benefits it offers.

According to research, tea

  • has antioxidant properties
  • may help reduce LDL cholesterol
  • may improve focus and alertness
  • may keep the heart healthy

There are many different types of tea like black tea, white tea, green tea, yellow tea and flavoured & scented teas. The main difference between the different types of tea is their method of production which results in different flavours.

Some of the popular teas include:

  • Assam, Ceylon, Darjeeling, Kenyan, English Breakfast, Keemun (all black teas)
  • Oolong, Baozhong (all green teas)
  • Jasmine, Rose Congou, Earl Grey (flavoured and scented teas)

The tea market is an ever-growing market and there are always emerging trends. Iced tea has gained a lot of popularity in the UK as has Bubble Tea which is a cold beverage made of milk tea with tapioca balls!

Herbal teas (tisanes) are also immensely popular. These are made from infusion of herbs, spices, fruits etc. and usually do not contain any tea (Camellia sinensis) leaves. You may say that the term 'herbal tea' is a misnomer but the term has become well established and herbal teas are a popular alternative to traditional teas and are definitely a huge part of the tea world!

I enjoy both traditional teas and herbal teas/infusions. While it's always a true tea to begin my day, herbal teas are what I enjoy drinking at other times of the day.

Herbal teas are refreshing, fragrant, mostly caffeine-free and come with many health benefits. And in today's post I am sharing some of my recent favourites with you.

Organic India Herbal Tulsi Tea

I was introduced to Organic India last year. They have a fantastic range of herbal teas all of them featuring Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum / Holy Basil).

Organic India Herbal Tulsi Tea

Organic India work with a number of small family farmers across India to cultivate thousands of acres of sustainable organic farmland. The essence of their brand is "consciousness in action". All their products and practices are created by conscious decisions based on true wellness & oneness for the planet, their farmers, their employees and the consumers.

We tried out the following teas from Organic India:

  • Tulsi Pomegranate Green
  • Tulsi Original
  • Tulsi Lemon Ginger
  • Tulsi Brahmi
  • Tulsi Turmeric Ginger

Tulsi Pomegranate Green is a flavourful blend of Green Tea and Tulsi, infused with Pomegranate and Hibiscus flowers. It has a tangy flavour of Raspberries, is fruity and refreshing and makes for a great mid-morning pick me up.

Tulsi Turmeric Ginger is a delicious and stress relieving drink that blends Tulsi with

Turmeric, Ginger & Cinnamon. This is my favourite. Mr.H loves Tulsi Brahmi which as the name suggests is a combination of Tulsi and Brahmi (Centella asiatica / Indian pennywort) and is an uplifting blend. It is also said to aid in digestion and metabolism.

The Tulsi Lemon Ginger blend is also fantastic - zesty, refreshing and full of flavour. Highly recommended.

Honey Heaven CBD Herbal Loose Leaf Teas

CBD products come in various forms and with varying CBD content and are gaining popularity in the UK. CBD / Hemp teas, generally made of the hemp plant along with complementary ingredients are said to promote health and wellbeing.

Honey Heaven, who are known for their 100% organic honey products, also have a range of CBD Herbal Teas that combine the relaxing properties of CBD from Organic Irish Hemp with carefully selected Hungarian herbs. At present they have three infusions: Energize, Detox and Good Night, all three teas with 10g Organic Hemp containing 300mg CBD.

We tried two of the three flavours and loved them. Detox is made of Apple Pieces, Elderflower, Rosehip, Ginger, Cinnamon, Mix Spice and Organic Hemp (300mg CBD) while Good Night is made of Hawthorn Flower, Hop, Chamomile, Lavender and Organic Hemp (300mg CBD). Both the teas are caffeine-free and 100% natural. All the herbs used in the blend and the Hemp are organically grown and are pesticides-free.

The herbal teas are easy to brew and even if you are not looking for specific health benefits, the teas impart their own soothing benefits and help in boosting the mood.

If you’re looking for a great quality CBD tea, we highly recommend that you check out Honey Heaven CBD Herbal Loose Leaf Teas. The three varieties are available in a gift pack priced at £35; alternatively you can buy them individually for £15 each.

Bird & Blend Tea Co

Bird & Blend Tea Co. is an independent, award-winning tea company with over 100 blends in different flavours to choose from. They create fun & new flavours by blending green tea or chamomile tea with ingredients like herbs, flowers, fruits, caramel and even chocolate!

We tried three fun teas from the brand:

  • One in a Melon - Hand blended and with low-caffeine, this tea is refreshing, juicy, and very delicious. It is blended with peppercorns, freeze-dried strawberries & pomegranate flowers but retains the sweetness of the watermelon. A truly lovely blend that is perfect for summer.
  • Honeycomb Cookie, Doh! - this is a limited edition rooibos blend with a combination of delicious honeycomb & sweet cookie dough. It is an amazing tea - smells lovely and tastes wonderful. It is like a sweet treat and is great on its own and even nicer with a dash of milk.
  • Jasmine Poached Pears - I wasn't sure what to expect from this blend but it was quite a surprise and in a wonderful way. This jasmine green tea with pear pieces is both fruity and floral and is perfect as a cold brew. The blend is refreshing, not too strong and I think makes for a great summer tea!

Bird & Blend Tea Co

We loved all the three blends. Unusual combos that get the flavour combination just right.

Bird & Blend Tea Co. offer a monthly tea club subscription box that is a great way to discover their award-winning tea flavours.
