Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has long been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. It is also very common in Indian cooking. Its warm, earthy taste and lovely yellow colour add a delectable touch to any dish it is added to.
Turmeric gained popularity worldwide in recent years due to its therapeutic properties. Its health benefits are many ranging from anti-inflammatory effects to helping the digestive system work more effectively and from antioxidant properties to helping boost the immune system. There are a few other benefits as well and studies are on to unlock other potential benefits.
The health benefits of turmeric are due to the active ingredient Curcumin found in it. This is what gives turmeric its bright yellow colour and is responsible for all its health benefits. However, if you want to consume turmeric for health benefits, it doesn't work well if you take it via curry/other food as turmeric (curcumin) is not absorbed well by the body on its own. And that is where turmeric supplements come in to the picture. With these you can get the required amount of turmeric (curcumin) in a more bioavailable form.
Turmeric supplements/products come in a variety of formats ranging from capsules to sprays and from effervescent tablets to teas. Take a look at some of them listed below and you might find one suitable to your liking.
HerbScience Bio-Sorb Turmeric from Stirling Health
HerbScience Bio-Sorb Turmeric provides 500mg of curcumin per capsule and as per the makers has been ‘bio-enhanced’ for optimal absorption.
According to the brand, it features BCM-95 (all the curcuminoids and essential oils naturally present in the turmeric rhizome) and is totally derived from turmeric with no carriers, excipients, additives or bioenhancers. This ensures both product quality and safety.
These turmeric capsules can help with joint health, inflammation issues, cognitive health, improving mood and cell health.
If you are okay with taking capsules, this one is a very good option as according to HerbScience it is seven times more powerful than standardized 95% turmeric.
Priced at £18.95 for 30 capsules, the capsules are available from www.stirling-health.net
BetterYou Turmeric Oral Spray
For those who find tablets and capsules difficult to swallow, the Turmeric oral spray from BetterYou is a good alternative. According to BetterYou, the spray utilises a 'unique molecular encapsulation process' that ensures essential curcuminoids are effectively absorbed via the soft tissue of the mouth, entering the rich vein system below.
Four sprays of the oral spray contains 26mg of the three active curcuminoids and it need not be taken with food or a drink, so you can take it at whatever time works for you.
Made with natural ingredients, natural emulsifiers, flavours and sweetener (xylitol), the spray has a pleasant orange flavour and is suitable for vegetarians, vegans and those following a gluten free diet.
I was a little worried about the spray pump causing a problem, but I haven't faced any issues so far. The only thing you need to be careful about is not getting any of the product on your clothing or body as it stains.
The Turmeric Oral Spray (25ml) bottle contains 120 sprays and with a daily dosage of four sprays, it will last a month.

It is delicious blended with milk and can be used as a part of a daily healthy eating routine. Makes a great filling meal and is a very nice way of consuming turmeric (each serving contains the equivalent of four teaspoons of turmeric).
