Love sparkling beverages? Whether it is soda or sparkling fruit juices or fizzy cocktails, a soda maker will help you make your own bubbly drinks at home. SodaStream, who are one of the world’s leading sparkling water brands, recently sent us a SodaStream Spirit Hydration Pack to try out. And it turned out to be the perfect sparkling water maker for our drinking needs.
Spirit is one of the newest additions to the SodaStream family. It is a slim, cordless design that doesn't need electricity.
The Hydration Pack that we were sent included the following:
- The sparkling water maker
- 60L CO2 cylinder (it makes up to 60L of sparkling water)
- 1L bottle x2
- 0.5L bottle x2
- Soda Press - Lemonade
- Soda Press - Raspberry & Mint
Spirit is also available as a 'Starter Pack' which includes the main unit, a carbonating cylinder and one clear bottle.
Coming back to the unit we received, it was very easy to put to use. First, we had to install the CO2 cylinder in the Sparkling Water Maker. Then fill one of the carbonating bottles with cold water up to the fill line mark and insert it into the main unit. Once it locks into place, you need to push on the carbonating button for a couple of seconds, release and repeat. Depending on the amount of fizz you need, you can vary the number. For e.g. 2-3 times for light fizz, 5-6 times for strong fizz and more for extra fizz! Wait for a few moments before you pull the bottle out. At this point you can add the flavours. Add it gently and mix with a gentle shake. And your fizzy drink is ready! We tried the Ginger Ale flavour and it was fab - clean and crisp with subtle citrus and ginger notes.
SodaStream have a variety of flavours like Pink Grapefruit, Cola, Raspberry & Mint and Classic Indian Tonic to name a few. You can buy all of these from SodaStream's website. You can also use your favourite squash or cordial too.

So, what did we like about the SodaStream?
- It's simple and so easy to use.
- Reduction in plastic bottle and metallic cans usage. Even if it is by a small margin, we think this will reduce the amount of plastic waste we create. No more buying those 2 litres, plastic soda bottles.
- While there is an initial upfront cost, the SodaStream soda maker will overtime pay for itself; especially if you buy/drink carbonated beverages regularly.
