It's National Rum Day today and hence the perfect excuse to indulge in your favourite rum cocktail. Rum is made from sugarcane by-products (molasses) or directly from sugarcane juice and is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the world. Rum is available in different grades depending on the location where they were produced and their flavour. Dark rums, gold rums, light rums, flavoured rums, spiced rums and premium rums are some of the variations available. My personal favourites are dark rum and spiced rum. My first experience of rum was consuming it neat and I loved it. That is the way you can actually appreciate the flavour of the rum. However, rum works well in a mixer or as a foundation for a cocktail too.
31Dover.com stock a wide range of rums - from the premium Don Papa Rum (from the Philippines) to the Dark Matter Spiced Rum from Scotland and from Gosling's Black Seal Bermuda Rum to Ron Zacapa’s XO Rum which is a fruity flavoured smooth rum. In celebration of National Rum Day, I have included a very simple cocktail recipe for rum-lovers featuring the Plantation 5 year old Barbados Rum.
The Plantation 5 year old is a blended rum from Barbados that is first aged in Bourbon casks in the tropical climate and then transported to France for a finish in Cognac casks. It has a beautiful amber gold colour and boasts of complex and well-balanced notes of ripe tropical fruits and vanilla, evolving to delicate hints of white peach and coconut. The palate is warm and complex with 2 different levels of flavours. According to the makers, the double ageing process creates an initial wave of tropical candied fruits which leads on to a voluptuous bourbon vanilla note.
This is a very simple yet tasty cocktail recipe. The combination of rum and the ginger beer will make you feel the spice and warmth of the Caribbean shores.
1. Fill a mason jar with ice cubes.
2. Pour 50ml Plantation Barbados Rum and 150ml of any ginger beer into the jar.
3. Garnish with a wedge of lime and enjoy!
The Plantation 5 year old Barbados Rum is priced at £25.95 for 70cl. The mason jar featured in this post comes in a set of 4 and is priced at £12.95. Both of these can be ordered online from 31Dover.com.
