Today is World Heart Day - an initiative to raise awareness globally about cardiovascular diseases. The World Heart Foundation believes that looking after your heart starts by understanding your risks. So you need to make sure that you are aware of your health numbers like - blood glucose levels, blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI. All these when maintained at healthy levels will ensure that your heart is functioning properly and stays healthy. According to Heart UK (The Cholesterol Charity), certain hearty foods can help lower your cholesterol at any age. Some of the foods that play an important role in reducing cholesterol levels are listed below.
- Soya products
- Nuts
- Oats and Barley (as they are rich in a form of soluble fibre called beta glucan)
- Fruits/Vegetables like Sweet Potato, Broccoli, Aubergine, Apples, Prunes & Strawberries etc.
- Foods rich in unsaturated fats like Olive oil, Sunflower oil etc.
To coincide with the World Heart Day, Herbalife Nutrition recently launched Beta Heart - a new product that is designed to help lower or maintain blood cholesterol. It is a vanilla flavoured powder that contains OatWell oat beta glucan as its key ingredient. You can add 1 or 2 scoops to water, fruit juice or smoothie. Each scoop of Beta heart provides 1.5g oat beta glucan, 3g fibre, is sugar free and only 25 kcals.
Herbalife Nutrition sent a healthy heart hamper to me recently to whizz up a heart healthy shake and here is what I came up with.
Ingredients:
5-6 Dates (seeds removed and soaked in warm water)
1/4 cup Mornflake Oats (soaked in warm water)
1/2 banana
1 scoop Beta heart
Low fat milk
Almonds for garnishing
Soak the dates and oats in warm water for a while (until they are soft). Blend the dates, oats, Beta heart and the banana using a hand blender. Add low fat milk to make it up to the 250ml level in the blender jar. Blend again. Garnish with almonds. Enjoy.
