Gigaset are a very well known name in the Telecom industry. They have an impressive range of home phones and phone accessories. Our current landline phone is Gigaset A540A and I love its build and sound quality - the best landline phone we have ever had. Some time back Gigaset forayed into the tablet market with QV830, an 8-inch Android tablet that in their own words is a compact tablet for unlimited multimedia fun. Priced at £59.99, the Gigaset QV830 sounded like a wonderful low-cost alternative to the higher end tablet models in the market. I have had the chance to try out the QV830 over the past few weeks and here is the lowdown on the product and my experience with it.
QV830 Specifications
The QV830 is an 8-inch Android tablet (4.2.2 Jelly Bean) which is powered by a Quad-core 1.2 GHz processor. QV830 comes with 8 GB eMMC Flash memory and 1 GB DDR3L RAM memory. The tablet has a 3260 mAh / 3.7V Lithium Polymer battery which promises up to 7 hours of video playback or up to 65 hours (Backlight off) of audio playback. The tablet has a standby time of approximately 240 hours and takes around 4 hours to charge completely.
QV830 offers a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels at 160dpi and the colour and contrast are well balanced. There is a front 1.2MP camera (720p HD) and an auto-focus 5MP rear camera. Other handy features included are Bluetooth 4.0 (Low Energy), WLAN, Wi-Fi and WiFi-based A-GPS. A lot of features that you might see in an expensive tablet are missing, but as a budget buy QV830 is a good purchase.
QV830 Build and Features
When I first held the QV830 in my hand, I was impressed by its build quality. For the budget price the QV830 is sold at, I had half expected the tablet casing to be plastic, but was surprised and happy to note that it had an anodized aluminium rear casing. The top and bottom portion of the tablet, when held vertically, are made of shiny metal with the top housing all the controls and ports - the volume control, micro USB port, 3.5mm jack for headphones, micro SD card slot with a cover and the main power button.
To turn on the tablet, you need to press the Power button and hold for a few seconds. When the tablet is powered up the first time, it will take you through a set-up wizard where you can choose your home network, link/create your Google account and connect to a Wi-Fi network. There was also a tiny update to the touch panel firmware that I had to run and then the tablet was ready to use.
Gigaset have chosen a select few apps to be pre-installed on the tablet which is very good in my opinion. I do not like a clutter of apps that I would in any case not use. Of the included ones there are a few that I often use like Blogger, Hangouts and Maps. Google™ Play store comes pre-installed, so you can download your favourite/often used apps from the store either free or for a reasonable price.
QV830 Performance
Gigaset mentions 7 hours of video playback on the QV830, but I have noticed that it usually lasts around 5 to 5.5 hours when I watch movies or play music on the tablet. Mr.H tested the tablet by playing videos in different formats and with variable audio settings. He also tweaked the tablet's screen brightness during the test. Our conclusion - the playback time depends on the video format and screen settings. So Gigaset's claim of 7 hours video playback holds true; just that it is dependant on your video file format.
One thing that could be improved is QV830's internal speaker quality. It is a bit harsh for my liking. The tablet fares better with the use of a headphone. Physically, the QV830 is the perfect size for me. I have an IPad Air which I love, but the smaller size of the QV830 ensures that it fits perfectly in my hand when held vertically. I have encountered no issues with the tablets screen in terms of responsiveness and the performance has been good too. Both the cameras are decent enough. The autofocus lens is a good feature, allowing you take close-ups without the photo looking too blurry.
QV830 looks and feels good and performance wise, the QV830 delivered what I was expecting from it. I have been impressed with it so far and have actually started liking the 8-inch screen. The tablet is easy to use and perfect for browsing on the go, chatting and for listening to music making it an ideal travel companion.
The best part is definitely the QV830's price - £59.99 (on sale currently at currys.co.uk), which I feel is a very good bargain.

ReplyDeleteI as glad to see you mentioned the Blogger app - I've tried Blogger on my tablet and just can't get on with it, it only lets me write/edit the first half dozen lines of a post, so if Blogger works on this tablet that's the main thing I'd use it for - I'd love to be able to update my blog on the go, as well as to plan, write and schedule new posts. It's very restrictive these days only being able to blog from home.
