I adore skin care gadgets and have a few that I use regularly in my skin care regime. But a hand-held gadget that promises to deliver the same pore refining and skin purifying results as salon microdermabrasion treatments but at a fraction of the salon price? That got me all excited and curious! I am sure you are as excited to hear more about this product - the PMD Personal Microderm.

What is PMD and how does it work?

PMD is a hand-held microdermabrasion device. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive form of exfoliation which removes the dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin. When the dead skin cells are removed, it triggers our body's healing mechanism and the removed skin cells are replaced with new, healthy ones. This offers a lot of benefits to the skin - blemishes are reduced, skin tone is improved and rough skin is smoothened thereby improving the skin's appearance.

Microdermabrasion was initially available only in medical spas and salons. But with the PMD Personal Microderm you can try a similar treatment at home. The PMD uses aluminium oxide crystals(for deep exfoliation) and a vacuum suction to smooth away dead skin cells revealing younger and rejuvenated skin.

What is included in the PMD kit?

Included in the PMD kit are the following components:
- The PMD Personal Microderm
- 7 exfoliating discs(1 white disc, 2 grey discs, 2 blue discs and 2 green discs)
- 2 caps(1 large for the body and 1 small for use on the face)
- An electrical cord with 3 different plug adaptors
- 1 re-usable filter
- An instructional DVD and a pamphlet

The DVD contains important information about the PMD device and also a demonstration on how to use it. It is advised that you watch the DVD before you use the PMD.

Preparing for the treatment

Before you begin the actual treatment, it is recommended that you use the white training disc either on your arm or neck and notice how your skin reacts. If you feel any pain or if there is severe irritation, you should stop and discontinue use. I did not experience any pain or discomfort, so I went forward with the treatment. Another key point to remember is not to use any facial peel products like Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acid or Retinol products 48 hours before or after using the PMD as this will make your skin very sensitive.

Once you are ready for the PMD treatment, you need to make sure that your face is cleansed and free from make-up etc. Pat dry and ensure skin is not damp as the disc will not glide smoothly on damp skin. The PMD doesn't use batteries, which is good as you don't have to worry about battery replacements. Simply find a suitable power outlet and connect the power cord to the PMD device. Lock the connector in place and you are ready to begin the treatment.

How to use the PMD?

The PMD device has an ergonomic shape and a rubberised grip making it very easy to hold and use. Use your free hand to pull the skin tight. Now turn on the PMD and move it in an upward motion across the skin. You have to take care that you do not hover or stop in any one spot and also ensure that you do not make more than two passes over any one area during the treatment. Once done, you can follow up with your regular moisturiser. If you are heading out, make sure you wear sunscreen.

Note: There should be a waiting period of 6-7 days between PMD treatments. i.e. use it once a week.

My experience with the PMD

I had tested the PMD on my arms prior to the first treatment and since there was no pain I started off with the actual treatment. The first time I used the device on my face, I opted for the white training disc as I wanted to begin with the least strength abrasion. Apart from training, the white training disc can also be used for ultra-sensitive skin, so it was the perfect option to begin the treatment with. I kept the skin taut with my free hand and began to move the device across my face. While there was no pain, it did feel a bit weird the first time as I was not used to the suction feeling :) A couple of times the suction effect got the better of me and I was unable to move the device smoothly over my forehead as the PMD got stuck to the skin. This resulted in slight redness on the forehead but skin was back to normal in some time. During my subsequent uses of the PMD, I got improved control over the device and did not face any issues with manoeuvring it. It takes a while to get used to it but ultimately the PMD is very easy to use.

I have so far only used the white and grey discs. While the white is for training/ultra sensitive skin, the grey ones are for very sensitive skin. Included in the box were blue and green discs as well, which I haven't progressed to yet.

Coming to the effects of the microdermabrasion - it has definitely improved my skins look and feel. Skin feels more even toned and smooth to touch and I feel that my skincare products are working better which I would attribute to the removal of the top dead skin layer. I think regular usage of the PMD will show even more improvement in my skins condition. My skin is sensitive and at times very sensitive due to the medication I am currently on. However, the white and grey discs have been working well for me and in all probability I would continue to use only these 2 discs.

The PMD discs lose their effectiveness after a few treatments and need to be replaced. Replacement discs can be purchased from the PMD website and cost around £19 for a 6-disc pack. The PMD Personal Microderm is priced at £150.00 and available online at personalmicroderm.co.uk The price may appear steep but if you compare it to a professional treatment in a salon, then it works out to be a reasonable buy. PMD offers similar benefits as a professional treatment but at a considerably less price and you can use the device at home as per your convenience.

Let me reiterate that you need to test your skin before microdermabrasion to see how it will respond to the microdermabrasion treatment. To sum it up, the PMD device takes practice and care to operate correctly but it is a powerful device and does deliver a good microdermabrasion treatment when used as per the instructions.
